A summary is a brief synopsis of the main arguments of the text you have read. It recaps the questions or issues raised in the text in approximately 1-2 pages.
Please include the following:
A statement is a short argumentative comment on a topic or text and/or refers to the core thesis(es) of said text.
It differs from a summary in that it formulates its own position and does not merely reproduce the argumentation of a given text.
Compared to a summary or statement, an essay (from the French essayer, “to try”) is a more stylistically demanding form of writing. An essay is a form of presentation that freely discusses a topic.
An essay is characterized above all by the fact that it discusses a question or problem in a pointed or even provocative manner. It is therefore not a systematic presentation or analysis of a topic.
The aim of writing an essay should be to critically evaluate and discuss academic positions. This is usually achieved by presenting one's own thoughts or positions that go beyond simply reproducing the texts used.
An essay does not follow a strict structure in terms of content or form. Furthermore, one's own arguments do not necessarily have to be supported by academic citations. Passages from the text being discussed can be integrated into the essay.
As term papers can generally take on very different formats, please obtain more detailed information from the respective instructors.
